Paulding County Schools in Spokane have closed all school hours on Tuesday, according to an email from Superintendent of Schools Greg Eberhart.
Schools in Pauldedale, Jefferson County, and Spokane will reopen later in the day.
Eberhart said he was unable to provide an exact time frame for when students will return to classes.
The closure of schools has been in the works since a school board vote in May to eliminate the annual event, which was a fundraiser for the school district.
Last week, it was announced that the school board would not be able to continue the event, and all students would be sent home.
In a statement, the district said the closure would be implemented in phases, and that “we are grateful for the many supportive messages we have received from the community.”
The Pauldings have the most students of any school district in the county, according a 2014 report from the state Department of Education.
In addition to the closure, the city of Spokane has also announced that all schools will close on Monday.
Spokane Public Schools said in a statement that it was working with the county to ensure students have the opportunity to attend school.
